Blurring the boundaries between art and fashion, Andrew Sutherland’s work seeks to pursue unusual and playful ideas. Working predominantly in crochet, each work crafted by hand, contrasting with mass produced fast fashion. His pieces are made using a variety of found and sourced materials and are inspired by the collection of interesting secondhand artefacts. Andrew's constructed, three dimensional textiles are influenced by narratives and fictional characters from a range of contemporary sources. The working process encourages play within knit, usually a very structured and controlled process. Small components are created first, before combining these sections together. This way of working allows for the creation of larger pieces in a more spontaneous manner, similar to children’s construction games.
