Joyce Bao is a Chinese American designer originally from Michigan, USA. She had moved around many different places as a child, the sense of displacement growing up led to her designs’ focus on personal healing and the creation of a “safe space”. She tackles her own psychological struggles in each of her projects and hopes to find a stronger and more authentic self with each collection. 

 

Bao is currently a postgraduate student at Central Saint Martins, and her most recent release is from her Materiality Project that explores the possibilities of wax as a textile medium with silhouettes inspired by the mental weight of unexpressed emotions. All the pieces are handmade with sustainability in mind (with vintage/deadstock materials and natural compostable wax), and each piece possesses a customized scent.
